Natural Gas – The Answer to All Our Energy Problems


Many people associate natural gas with a gas that is naturally occurring, despite its name. While this may be true to some extent, the real meaning of natural gas is somewhat vague. It actually contains eight gases. The main ones are methane ethane and butane, carbon dioxide as well as oxygen and nitrogen. The gas is typically colorless and odorless. But, to make it more distinct, small insignificant chemicals called odorants that can add a distinctive smell are added.

Methane is the main gas that we are familiar with. This is the gas that is delivered to our houses for domestic purposes. Natural gas is a vital part of our everyday lives and homes. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), which consists of propane and yetane, is used widely in the US for heating ovens, clothes drying, boilers and central heating in homes during harsh weather. There are increasing numbers of power plants that produce electricity for our homes and lights our cities. Because we depend on gas to provide our power, hydrogen from natural gas is increasingly popular. Other countries such as Argentina, Brazil (and India), Pakistan, India, and Sweden have already made significant progress in reducing their dependence on petroleum and gasoline.

Canada Natural Gas can be formed by the same process that crude oil is made. Both natural gas and oil are formed from the chemical decomposition over time of dead organic material in the absence or oxygen. The oil and natural gas are often found together in underground wells. They belong to the group of fuels called fossil fuels because of how they were formed. Surprisingly, despite being very similar in origin, they have different properties and practical application.

Oil was the only energy source in the wells. In previous times, gas was seen as an undesirable by product. Flaring was the process of burning the gas in the atmosphere. Flaring of natural gas was a problem for environmentalists as it was known to cause significant pollution and caused enormous damage to the environment.

Until then, gas was discovered to be a viable energy source that could offer many economic advantages over crude oil. These include lower production costs, greater environmental friendliness and increased availability. Natural gas has been proven to be efficient in burning, with little waste. It is 43% more efficient at burning than petrol and 66% more than coal. Although some molecules in oil or coal are not completely burned and are released into nature, this is not true for gas. It emits relatively less harmful carbon dioxide byproducts than coal or oil. Many experts also believe that there may be more gas in the world than any amount of crude oil. The largest natural gas reserves are thought to be in the Middle East, specifically Iran and Qatar. They are estimated at approximately 900 trillion, 500 trillion, and 500 trillion cubic yards, respectively.

However, the good news is that natural gasoline can be made artificially. No need to be worried about global petroleum reserves decreasing. There is no way to know how to produce it yet. But natural gas can be made artificially. Methane is its main component. It can be obtained biologically using agricultural waste as well as organic waste materials such dead plants and animal waste. These waste products are chemically broken up by methane-producing microorganisms, also known as methanogens. It is produced in much the same manner as natural gas.

Methane is one of the most dangerous greenhouse gases. However, there are many concerns about its nature. Although gases naturally found in the atmosphere regulate the planet’s temperature to maintain a comfortable level, man’s curious exploits have led to increased levels of methane. This has caused them to trap and seal increasing amounts of heat beneath the earth’s crust. Some believe that increasing use of Natural Gas as a source of fuel would only make the problem worse. That is yet to be proven. Many people are aware that more environmentally friendly energy sources must be found. However, until these sources are developed to a level that is economically viable, natural gas can still be a viable option to help us continue our quest to make the planet cleaner and healthier.
